New Reflections On Cancer Control
Concept, Design, Layout
Objective: The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) uses population data to advance cancer research and help people live longer, healthier lives. Each year DCCPS publishes an Overview and Highlights report, and companion microsite, showcasing their achievements and impact. For 2022, the goal was to expand on the success of the previous year’s report, by retaining its striking simplicity while pushing the visuals and narrative even further.
Solution: Humans are multifaceted—complex, layered, and too nuanced to be defined by a single story, path, or approach to care. DCCPS embraces this complexity, studying populations with the understanding that no two individuals are ever the same. For the 2022 Overview and Highlights report and microsite, we explored this idea through metaphor: like light passing through a prism revealing a spectrum of colors, every individual affected by cancer reveals a multitude of unique variables when analyzed more deeply. The design reflects this transformation, revealing gradients, hidden shapes, and subtle shifts in tone to symbolize the power of perspective and the importance of looking deeper.
