This mobile game is fashioned in the format of the ever-popular building style game, a la Sims/Gardenscapes/Minecraft, where the player can choose from a series of products and upgrades to build their new energy efficient home.

The game begins with the framing of a home being built and as the player proceeds through the game they are presented with two options for each building category (insulation, windows, water heater, and light bulbs), one that is more efficient and one that is less efficient. Once they select their choice the house continues to be built until completion. At the end of the game they are able to see how certain choices and upgrades would affect the energy efficiency of their new homes. Since the target audience is people that are building a home, this game serves as both an educational opportunity and an advertisement for the BGE Energy Star® Certified New Homes program.

In this Pac-Man-style mobile game, we used the 8-bit nostalgia of Gen-X (the target market) to promote BGE’s HPwES program. The player navigates a maze collecting “energy-saving upgrade” icons scattered across the game board, but they have to be sure to collect them all before the clock runs out. At the end, the player is invited to schedule a home energy audit and get rebates on average of $3,000 for the home upgrades they just collected during the game.
