The DCCPS Overview & Highlights report is an annual report spotlighting the initiatives and accomplishments of the division for that year. In 2021 origami was the chosen inspiration and graphical theme due to the powerful metaphor it serves for the process of scientific research. Like origami, research begins with a blank sheet of paper. Data is then compiled and interpreted, like paper being folded into and upon itself, until its complexity reveals an elegant and holistic solution. Essentially, in both instances, what started as a blank sheet of paper is transformed into a result that is complex and dynamic.
The look we developed uses thin, intersecting lines and lots of white space to reference the intricate folds of origami. We also incorporated photography of different origami throughout to add visual interest and serve as metaphors for the content.
The client was ecstatic with the result. So much so, that they requested an entire communication package centered around the origami theme, including a custom microsite for the digital version of the report, as well as a motion graphic, Twitter ads, PowerPoint, and even a commemorative trophy.
